Major Picnic spots in Kodai Kanal
Kodai Lake,
Kodaikanal Lake is a manmade lake in the Kodaikanal city which is also known as Kodai Lake. Vera Levinge was the man responsible for the creativity and resources of this lake amidst Kodaikanal town. This lake was developed by the British and early missionaries from the USASA.
The star-shaped lake is centrally located in Kodaikanal and is surrounded by the rich green Palani Hills Range the main watershed for the lake. The lake is situated at an elevation of 2285m above sea level and has an average depth of 3.0m. The lake is at a distance of 3 km from the Kodai Bus stand.
Vera Levinge was a District Collector of Madurai who settled in Kodaikanal after his retirement in 1863. He spent his money to convert the marshy land with several streams of the lake by constructing a strong bund. He also bought boats from Tuticorin. It is said that foreign residents used to swim in this very lake
Today, a large number of tourists, including kids, stroll around, sail, ride horses and ponies and cycles and admire the lake. One can also go fishing, but only after obtaining permission from Inspector of Fisheries. The Kodaikanal Boat and Rowing Club, as well as the Tamil Nadu Tourist Development Corporation, offer similar boat services for similar prices: INR 20-40 for a two-seater pedal boat to INR125 (including boatman) for a Kasmirishikara (covered gondola – like boat) for 30 minutes. There are luxury boats available too.
Suicide Point
Formerly known as Suicide point, the Green Valley View offers a breathtaking view of the plains, deep valleys and hills. The mesmerizing view of the Vaigai Dam is an unforgettable experience. It used to be known as suicide point because of the dangerous valley which is dense and deep; below the point of more than 5000 feet drop.
Located at a distance of 5.5 km from the Kodaikanal Lake, the Green Valley View not just offers a gorgeous view, but is also surrounded by a lot of monkeys. On the way to the point, there are several shops which offer homemade chocolates, ornaments and a wide range of flower
The best time to visit the Valley View is between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM as the valley gets covered by mist as the day advances making it difficult to have a clear view
Pillar Rocks,
The famous Pillars Rocks of Kodaikanal are located around 8 km from the lake and are an exquisite picnic spot. Constituting of a beautiful mini garden, the place is so named as it has three vertically positioned boulders reaching up to a height of 400 feet.
An important attraction is the Devil’s kitchen, which is the space between the two rocks. The Potato and onion Bhaji served outside the garden is highly recommended
Bear Shola Falls, Kodaikanal
Located at a mere distance of 2 kilometers from the Kodaikanal Lake, the Bear Shola Falls is a popular tourist spot in the region. This cascade is a seasonal attraction which comes to life in its fullest during the monsoons, when the water flows down from the hilltop making its way through the verdant greenery of the region. An interesting legend behind the unique name of this place is that it was a favorite haunt of a bear who used to frequent this water body to drink water, hence imparting it the name Bear Shola Falls. Coakers Walk, Kodaikanal
Coakers walk is an one killometer long built on the mountain. It was constructed in 1872, by Lt Coaker. It is about 1/2 Km away from the Kodai and is constructed on the steep slope of mountains. The outlook of the path defines the beauty of the nature i.e mountains, valleys, cities etc. Telescope house is must watch of the coakers walk. People are allowed to ride bicycles.
Coakes walk at the Kodaikanals a pedestrian walk situated 1/2 km away from the Kodai. It is built on the edge of the steep slope of the mountain. It was constructed in 1872, by Lt Coaker. The outlook of the path defines the beauty of the nature i.e mountains, valleys, cities etc. Every four sides of coaker walk pictuarize one an the other beautiful thing. Walk starts near van Allen hospital and in route joins main road just above the St. Peter’s church. Normally weather around the Coakers walk is very cloudy. But during cloudless and clear day sight around the walk is very interesting. At the south east one observe the valley of the Pambarrive, in south Dolphine’s nose, city of madurai. Apart from walking, best part of Coakers walk is the Telescopic house provides a mesmerising view. The best time to visit the coakers walk is after 2.00 p.m.
Devil’s Kitchen, Kodaikanal
Devil’s Kitchen, which lays in between the Green Valley View and Pillar rocks, is a deep cleft that strikes to one as a small gutter. The Devils Kitchen is however, an extremely dangerous deep fall.
Vacationers are admonished to be heedful while sighting this spot. An enthralling and alluring place for all those who are adventurous and enthusiastic about challenging terrains, you must beware of the bats which reside in all the dark and deep chambers this place houses.
Berijam Lake, Kodaikanal
Berijam Lake is a quaint reservoir near Kodaikanal town in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. It is at the old site of Fort Hamilton and is situated in the upper Palani hills, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Berijam Lake was formed as the result of the construction of a dam with sluice outlets and is part of a micro-watershed development project. Dolphin’s Nose, Kodaikanal
Dolphin’s Nose in Kodaikanal is a rustic and natural prodigy that features a flat rock protruding over a chasmal height of 6600 feet. Located almost 8 km from the main city center, this point offers breath taking views of the surrounding.
This destination is popular amongst forest explorers and trekkers alike. The 3 kms long trek that is embarked upon to reach this point offers some of the best views of the forests and clouds. There are small eateries around which sell tea, coffee and snacks.
Bryant Park, Kodaikanal
One of the most popular botanical gardens in Kodaikanal, the Brayant Park is known for its fauna, rafts and hybrids. The best time to visit this marvelous park is during the annual horticulture show that is held during the month of May.
The glass house is an important attraction as well. Named after the forest officer of Madurai, Mr.H.D.Bryant, it is scenically situated on the eastern side of the lake.
Silent Valley View, Kodaikanal
Silent Valley View is located in close proximity to the Pillar rock garden in Kodaikanal. The point is famous for proffering some astounding and stunning views of the Silent Valley.
